Baytown is located on I-10 about 20 miles southeast of Houston, Texas. It is a working waterfront. The ExxonMobil Baytown Complex, founded in 1919, is the largest refinery in the country and one of the largest in the world. Chevron Phillips’ Cedar Bayou plant, in operation since 1963 in Baytown, is their largest manufacturing site in the United States.
Baytown Weather Impact
While hurricanes are not yearly events in Baytown, the city’s proximity to the coast means residents must stay weather-aware. Storm surge and wind from a hurricane can cause life and property threatening conditions. Key hurricanes and tropical storms causing severe damage in Baytown include:
- Hurricane Beryl (2024)
- Hurricane Harvey (2017)
- Hurricane Ike (2008)
- Hurricane Alicia (1983)

- 1900 Storm
NOAA started tornado record keeping in 1950. Their data indicates Harris County, home to Baytown, has recorded the most tornadoes in Texas: 252 in total.
Storm preparedness is part of daily life in Baytown.
Downtown Baytown
There is a smaller downtown area. There is a nice Town Square Park at one end of town. It is obvious that work is being done in the area to become a thriving arts district. Garth Road is a large commercial mall area.
Food and Drink

El Toro in Baytown is amazing! It is one of the best Tex-Mex restaurants we have been to anywhere. The food was plentiful; the leftovers were a full meal for two by themselves!!! The atmosphere was pleasant and festive. Cadden, our waitstaff, could not have been more attentive! Overall, an excellent experience for a reasonable price!! Will definitely go back!
Baytown Seafood Restaurant and Crawfish Headquarters is located in Channelview, TX. The restaurant is in a smaller mall. The storefront doesn’t look like much, but the food was good and plentiful. I have never had fried crawfish tails before!
Attractions: Baytown and Surounding Area
We were pleasantly surprised by the number of things to do, see and experience in Baytown or a short drive from Baytown.

Baytown Nature Center, the San Jacinto Point Recreational Area, is a wonderful walking and fishing area located on a 450-acre peninsula along the Houston Ship Channel and surrounded on three sides by Burnet Bay, Crystal Bay, and Scott Bay. There are many really nice picnic areas and playgrounds throughout the park.

San Jacinto Museum and Monument is in Harris County. The San Jacinto Monument is a 567.31-foot-high column located on the Houston Ship Channel. The monument is topped with a 220-ton star that commemorates the site of the Battle of San Jacinto, the decisive battle of the Texas Revolution. The museum is dedicated to the construction of the monument. There was a fascinating 35-minute award – winning video about what happened at the Battle of San Jacinto. We took the Lynchburg Ferry to the Monument and back! The ferry was fun!

Space Center Houston is a learning center for science and space exploration. Lots of exhibits and films! Take the NASA Tram Tour and go onsite to NASA Johnson Space Center and get a behind-the-scenes look at space exploration. You can tour the astronaut training facilities, Mission Control, and more. You can experience the “Houston, we have a problem” event.
Home Base: The Campground
For us, a campground is not our destination. Our RV is self-contained. Rarely do we use campground services or amenities. We are explorers, not campground reviewers!
We stayed on site 30 at the Cedar Grove RV Resort in Baytown, Texas. The park is very clean and well-maintained. The staff were very accommodating. Simple check in. Our full hook-up site (water-electric-sewer) was on concrete. All sites had a reasonable amount of grass between them. There were short trees at every site. 30 and 50 amp service was available. Good Verizon cellphone coverage. We had an open sky for our satellite. Conveniently located. We would definitely return.
During our second stay in Baytown, we stayed at Houston East RV Resort. We stayed on site B-5. The park is very clean and well-maintained. The staff were very accommodating. Simple check in. Our full hook-up site (water-electric-sewer) was on concrete. 30 and 50 amp service was available. Good Verizon cellphone coverage. We had an open sky for our satellite. We decided to stay here for its close proximity to I-10. We would definitely return here as well.

Summary
The waterfront in Baytown is a working waterfront. There are wonderful parks with picnic areas at the Baytown Nature Center, and the city is working to make the downtown area an arts district, but at the end of the day, it is still a working waterfront area. Baytown and the surrounding towns can provide you with some unique experiences, for example, Space Center Houston and the San Jacinto Monument (be sure to go by way of the Lynchburg ferry!).
Since beginning our full-time journey to discover the country, we have found something to appreciate in every city and town we have passed through. We hope you enjoy reading about them as much as we have enjoyed discovering them!
