During our travels of the 48 contiguous United States, we have had many interesting and informative times taking tours on busses, boats and trains. Each one has been unique. Some tours have involved food, some have immersed us in history, some have taken us to places we would not have gone otherwise and some have been purely relaxing. All have entertained.
While some bus and walking tours can be generic, some have been outstanding. What is the difference? The tour guides. We have had some phenomenal guides. Some that quickly come to mind:
- Andrew with Zion Jeep Adventures (Hurricane, UT)
- Chris with Butte Trolley Tours (Butte, MT)
- Jay with Cajun Food Tours (Lafayette, LA)
- Jerrod with New Orleans City Tours (New Orleans, LA)
- Matt with Mt. Rushmore Tours (Rapid City, SD)
- Scott with Montana Trout Outfitters (Missoula, MT)
- Scott with Yellowstone Safari Tours (Bozeman/West Yellowstone, MT)
In this blog we have only included the tours we have found to be excellent or exceptional. All the tours we would recommend. We have NOT received monetary compensation from any of these companies, nor will we receive a commission if you book with them using our name.
Louisiana
Lafayette:
Cajun Food Tours was such a fun adventure. We had never been on a food tour before, but this one has set the bar high. Though we have been to Lafayette several times, Jay (our tour guide) took us to places we have never been before. One of those stops was the Poupart Bakery. We have now been back there many, many times!!!
New Orleans:
Our tour guide, Jerrod, has lived in NOLA his whole life. Though we had been to NOLA before, Jerrold brought facts alive! He took us to places we had never been to. Some areas included on the tour were: City Park, the Garden District, areas damaged during Hurricane Katrina, Treme, Bourbon Street, and St. Louis Cemetery #3.
Montana
Butte:
The Butte Trolley Tour is the best way to learn about Butte and its history. We had driven around Butte before taking the tour, and had even seen some of the sites Chris, our tour guide, took us to. However, seeing those same places through the eyes of a local who loves his city is totally different. Our tour included an opportunity to walk the first 100 feet of the 2,700 foot deep Orphan Girl Mine.
Bozeman/West Yellowstone:
One of the best things we did in this area was to schedule a tour of Yellowstone and Grand Tetons National Parks. We were able to see the highlights of both parks and know where we wanted to spend more time on our own. Scott was our tour guide for both days. He was extremely knowledgeable about the geology and wildlife in the area.
South Dakota
Rapid City:
Where do you begin in this area? We decided to take an all-day tour so we would know where we wanted to go back to. Matt, our tour guide, was so knowledgeable, informative and funny! We saw: Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Sylvan Lake and Custer State Park. We also drove on the Iron Mountain Road and the Needles Highway.
Utah
Zion Jeep Tours:
Zion National Park is an exceptionally busy park. With the scenic road in the park only open to shuttle busses we did not want a “crammed in with 100 other people experience”. This was the absolute best way to see Zion and to learn about its geology and wildlife. Andrew, our tour guide, was exceptional at knowing how to keep us away from the crowds. For example, on our three-hour tour, we saw only one other vehicle!
Washington D.C.
Washington D.C. Ghost Tours:
When we were staying at Cherry Hill Park in College Park, MD we wanted to do something different and fun. What better way to enjoy D.C. than in the evening on a ghost tour! We learned a lot of unique history along the way, especially about Georgetown and the White House. And yes, the White House was a stop on our ghost tour!
Take-away Points
For the longest time we never understood how pleasurable, informative and relaxing tours could be. Once we took our first tour, we were hooked! Hopefully reading our blog has piqued some interest in exploring this option of seeing an area. If you do, be sure to ask for our exceptional tour guides!
