Since beginning our full-time journey to discover the country, we have found something to appreciate in every city and town we have passed through. We hope you enjoy reading about them as much as we have enjoyed discovering them!

Geographically Myrtle Beach is at the middle of the Grand Strand in South Carolina.
Home Base: The Campground
For us, a campground is not our destination. Our RV is self-contained. Rarely do we use campground services or amenities. We are explorers, not campground reviewers!
We stayed at Lakewood Camping Resort on South King’s Highway in Myrtle Beach. The campground was clean and well maintained. Check in was easy; they come out to your RV to check you in. DO NOT arrive early (even a few minutes) unless you want to be charged $25. It is not possible to back up once you are in line for entrance. Our full hook up (water-sewer-electric) site was on a cement pad. Our back in site was short and narrow with just barely enough space to park the Jeep in front of us. 30 and 50 amp service was available. There was good cell phone coverage (Verizon) and a good open southern sky for our satellite. We were two sites back from the beach and had an obstructed view of the beach. We could smell and hear the surf at night.
Downtown
King’s Highway is downtown. It is a four lane highway through the center of town. It should be at least 6 lanes! It is a busy area. We never saw an old fashioned downtown with a city hall or town square.
Food and Drink
Captain Benjamin’s Calabash Seafood Buffet has all-you-can-eat (AYCE) crab legs and any other seafood you can imagine from catfish to shrimp. Also included in the AYCE buffet are breads, salads and desserts! No reason to go hungry here!
The Melting Pot was an experience. We know it is part of a chain (something we try to avoid in support of locally owned businesses), but something we have always wanted to try. It was a wonderful experience. We had cheese fondue as our appetizer and a chocolate fondue for our dessert. The main meal was cooked at our table. Extremely informative and attentive wait staff. This is a special occasion place not to be missed.
Attractions
The Beach: Enough said. A beautiful sandy beach, pretty crashing waves. In our opinion being able to walk the beach and play in the surf is the best thing about Myrtle Beach!!
This is a city based on tourism. Drive down King’s Highway and you will see Wonderworld, Ripley’s Believe it or Not, amusements parks, the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk and Promenade. Myrtle Beach is a tourist destination with many things to do. There are 100s of activities, shops, golf courses and restaurants. You can be as active or as relaxed as you want to be.
Check out the 1.2 mile Boardwalk. There are lots of shops and restaurants to visit.
Ride the Sky Wheel on the Promenade. It has 42 glass enclosed gondolas. It is about a 10-minute ride. If you are afraid of heights, this is not the ride for you!
If you want to check out a national historic landmark while in Myrtle Beach, check out Brookgreen Gardens with its 250 year old live oaks. They are absolutely beautiful draped in Spanish moss.
For a different experience, check out the Myrtle Beach State Park and Huntington Beach State Park. Huntington Beach SP offers kayaking in a salt marsh. The Myrtle Beach SP offers nature trails, a campground and a fishing pier.
Speaking of fishing piers, check out Pier 14 and the Second Avenue Pier.
Fun Facts
Myrtle Beach is located in the middle of the Grand Strand, a 60 mile stretch of beach that runs from the South Carolina state line to Winyah Bay.
Myrtle Beach State Park was the first state park in South Carolina.
At least 20 major motion pictures, 6 TV shows and 2 music videos have been filmed in Myrtle Beach. You may have heard of some of them: The Notebook, The Patriot, One Tree Hill, The Strangers and The Nutty Professor II.
Summary
With our campground right on the beach, we could take a 2 minute walk from our campsite across the in park road directly onto the beach. It is a busy place. With all of the attractions there is something for everyone to do.
