Impressions of Sherwood Shores, TX
Geographically, Sherwood Shores is located on the southern shores of Lake Texoma. The Red River runs through Lake Texoma, forming the border between Texas and Oklahoma. The closest town is Whitesboro, TX population 8,734 is about 15 minutes away from Sherwood Shores.
Shorewood Shores is a tiny geographic area with not much “action”. This would not be the place to go if you were looking for wild nightlife. The most action you might get here is seeing the fish jump in the water or when a fisherperson shouts, “I got a big one!”
Sometimes these are the nicest places to go. It is quiet and you can hear yourself think. You can just sit and watch the lake water lapping on the shore. You can take a relaxing walk around the park and look at the different flowers and plants.
The campground sites are far enough apart that your awning doesn’t hit someone else’s awning. It is just a nice quiet, relaxed place to spend some time to be at peace and to “recharge your emotional batteries”.
Downtown
There is no downtown Sherwood Shores. There is Route 377 which will take you to Whitesboro, Dennison or Sherman. Downtown Whitesboro was nice. There were lots of small shops and stores.
Food and Drink
We only ate out once while at Sherwood Shores. The rest of the time we had cook-outs with an up-close lake view!
We did go to a Mexican restaurant, Las Haciendas, in Whitesboro, on 2400 Hwy 82 East. The food was good and it was plentiful. We had enough leftovers for lunch the next day!
Attractions
Lake Texoma is the attraction for boating, fishing, exploring, viewing. It is huge, with 580 miles of shoreline, 93,000 acres of surface and holds 756,993,907,779 gallons of water! There are more than 6 million visitors per year to all of Lake Texoma! It is the 12th largest USACE lake, the largest in the Fort Worth district.
Home Base: The Campground
For us, a campground is not our destination. Our RV is self-contained. Rarely do we use campground services or amenities. We are explorers, not campground reviewers!
While the campground is usually NOT our destination, being on a lake is an exception!! It is a U.S. Army Corp of Engineers Campground (USACE). There are many newer campgrounds in this area, but if there is an ACE site available, it is what we will choose. We stayed on site C-2. The site was a back-in on level gravel. There was a covered cement patio with a new picnic table. The park is clean. Water and electric only. All reservations are done online through Reservation.gov. No one greeted us, which was fine. The sites are wide with grass and trees between sites. 30 and 50 amp service was available. There was good cell phone coverage (Verizon). Our site had an open southern sky for our satellite. There was some construction on the bridge and you could hear them working off and on during the day. Other than that, there was complete silence.
Fun Facts
Fishing is big in the area. People have been known to catch catfish that weigh between 5 and 70 pounds. In 2004, a blue catfish was pulled from Lake Texoma that weighed 121.5 pounds!! At the time it was a world record!! It was donated to a freshwater aquarium in Athens, Texas.
While it isn’t a “fun fact”, an interesting fact is that because the lake is a reservoir for many, many miles around, Lake Texoma has flooded many times. Hence the need to raise the bridge spanning the lake on Hwy 377 between Texas and Oklahoma. You can see from the picture how high the bridge is to avoid being damaged and/or washed away during flooding!
