Since beginning our full-time journey to discover the country, we have found something to appreciate in every city and town we have passed through. We hope you enjoy reading about them as much as we have enjoyed discovering them!

Geographically Hermon is a small town in central Maine. The local areas for exploration close to Hermon, all on the Penobscot River, include Bangor, Brewer and Hampden.
Home Base: The Campground
For us, a campground is not our destination. Our RV is self-contained. Rarely do we use campground services or amenities. We are explorers, not campground reviewers!
When we sold our house and for every visit back to Maine our primary campground has been The Pumpkin Patch Campground in Hermon, Maine. We stay in site 25. The whole campground is always very clean and well maintained. The landscaping is beautiful! The full hook up (water-sewer-electric) sites are plenty long and are on level gravel. 30 and 50 amp service is available. Good cell phone coverage (Verizon) and a good open southern sky for our satellite. It is a park that caters to people who are seeking a quiet campground experience as a base for exploring. We love it there!
Downtown
We are always drawn to quaint, unique downtown areas. Hermon is more of a bedroom community of Bangor. While there are a few businesses and stores in Hermon, “downtown” is the small mall across from the high school.
Bangor: There is a thriving downtown in Bangor. There are many small locally owned businesses and restaurants. Bangor lies on the west side of the Penobscot River. The river is the dividing line between Bangor and the city of Brewer. The Penobscot Theater is in downtown Bangor.
Food and Drink
We have lived in the area for many years and have our local favorite places to eat. We always gravitate toward small locally owned restaurants. This area does not disappoint.
Bangor: Looking for a good lobster roll or fried Maine seafood? We recommend McLaughlin’s Take-Out in Bangor. They also have fresh seafood for purchase, including live lobsters (they also ship live lobsters). Say “Hi” to Emily for us! Want an upscale happy hour or meal? Try either Timber or 11 Central in Bangor. Bagel Central has the best bagels in the area. Not exactly NY style bagels, but always fresh and really good.
Brewer: Another place for a good lobster roll is the Eagles Nest Restaurant. The restaurant is a local favorite. It is nothing fancy, but good food and huge portions for a reasonable price. This includes their lobster rolls! The Eagles Nest overlooks the Penobscot River.
Hampden: Pizza Gourmet is by far one of our favorite pizza places in the country. The dough has a great flavor, the sauce is really good and the toppings are plentiful. A family favorite is the hot wing pizza. And if you have never had a whoopie pie before, this is the best place to start. When we are visiting in Maine, we usually stock the freezer with at least a dozen!
Attractions
You have not been to the quintessential Maine until you arrive in Bangor. About an hour east of Bangor is Acadia National Park and the town of Bar Harbor. Check out the Bar Island Trail, only exposed during low tide, or the Shore Path, starting at the town pier. Want more woods than water? Take an hour drive north to the Katahdin Woods and Water National Monument.
Fun Facts
Horror writer Stephen King was born and raised in Maine. He owns and lived in a house on West Broadway in Bangor. For many years he has split his time between Maine and Florida. There are tours in town that can take you around to all of the different areas near Bangor he has used as the location of his horror books.
Summary
We lived in the Bangor area for many years. We feel it is the beginning of “the real Maine”. If you really want to experience Maine and all it has to offer, check out Bangor and go north and east.
